Meanwhile, SKX devotees were enraged that Seiko had taken their dive watches away, swapping them out for some poor excuse with a display case back, no screw-down crown, and a mere 100 meters of water resistance.įor us at home playing armchair corporate strategist, it all seemed to make sense: take away the budget SKX and force us to pony up for something from the more expensive Prospex line if we wanted a true diver. Last year when Seiko released its new Seiko 5 Sports line, I practically begged it to release a smaller version with no diving bezel. Seiko 5 Sports SNK line: Out-of-production (but still available on Prime!) Seiko 5 Sports SRPD line: Diving bezel, released in 2019 The Seiko 5 Sports SRPE line: Smooth bezel, released in 2020 Let’s take a look at three of the most important Seiko 5s: But older versions of the Seiko 5 can also still be found around the internet, signified by references beginning with SNK. The new Seiko 5 Sports lineup has references beginning in SRPD (with diving bezel), and SRPE (smooth) bezel. It’s a bit of a souped-up version of the older line: larger, more water-resistant, a bit more expensive. In 2019, Seiko revamped the Seiko 5 lineup, re-christening it the Seiko 5 Sports. As such, it’s important not only for Seiko, but for the entire watch industry, that the Seiko 5 lineup remains strong. For many (myself included), the Seiko 5 line is like the Playboy Magazine that a young teen finds under dad’s bed: it represents an introduction to a vast, often confusing new world. Over the half century since, Seiko has churned out dozens of beloved models that meet these criteria: true value proposition, everyday, go-anywhere, do-anything watches worthy of the many internet listicle spots you’ll certainly see them on. In this case, the rules stand for the principle that anyone should be able to afford a robust, durable sports watch to strap on their wrist for life’s adventures. Putting forth a set of rules that dictate how a watch should be made is very Seiko, but we should look beyond the set of rules to understand what the brand is actually trying to accomplish. The “5” is a reference to the attributes that any Seiko 5 watch would offer, i.e., automatic winding, a day and date display, water resistance, a recessed crown at 4 o’clock, and a durable case. Quickly, let’s jump back to 1963, when the original Seiko 5 was launched. Basically, it’s the perfect watch: affordable, reliable, loved by enthusiasts young and old, available on Prime (I mean, just search Seiko 5 on Amazon and you’ll see the variety of forms the line takes). I’ve written a number of laudatory articles about the lineup over the years. My last three watches were badly scratched up by the time I replaced them.Ah, the Seiko 5. I want one of those, but for what they cost, I want to be sure it's got a sapphire crystal. I did find the listing for the actual 6309-5280 amusing - "21600 vibrations per hour" certainly seems like it was written to make it sound like an electronic movement, but as far as I know, Citizen were the only electronic watches with automatic power plants. ![]() And for this money, i won't be afraid to wear it to work. ![]() ![]() 1Password 8 doesn’t feel like a downgrade-it feels like an upgrade. But as far as being afraid that AgileBits was going to degrade the Mac experience so much that I’d have no choice but to give up on 1Password and find something else to use on the Mac… that’s a non-issue. I prefer 1Password for its additional features, most importantly the ability to have shared vaults with members of my family. Apple’s built-in password vault is good and getting better. ![]() I’d like some more granular controls and the ability to have one Touch ID authentication be enough for a lot longer. That said, I found that 1Password was a bit too intrusive-I was being asked to validate every time I connected to a server in Panic’s Transmit FTP app, for example. Touch ID is much more reliable.įinally, I’m impressed by 1Password’s new support for SSH keys, which I use to connect to remote servers for command-line sessions or file transfers without the need of a password. Authenticating 1Password via my Apple Watch was too finicky-I’d frequently do it too soon or too late and mess everything up. I can work around this problem by copying the password to the clipboard and then pasting it in, but why take extra steps?Īs a recent user of Apple silicon on the desktop, I’m also happy to finally be able to use Touch ID to unlock 1Password, albeit via a Touch ID keyboard velcroed to the underside of my desk. I’d like to be able to use Autofill to type that password directly, but when I try, it mistakenly asks me if I want to update my system password. I’m frequently on a remote server and am asked to re-enter my password in order to run a command under sudo privileges. There are still a few places I wish 1Password would extend Autofill. All my passwords are in 1Password it shouldn’t matter if I’m in a web browser or in an app. Never again will I need to do a dance back and forth between apps in order to log in to Adobe Creative Suite or Microsoft Office or any other app on my Mac that requires a periodic login. Most impressively, 1Password’s Autofill feature now uses macOS Accessibility functionality to autofill logins in apps and in macOS system password prompts. When it fails, I’ve trained myself to use 1Password’s new Quick Access window, which I can summon with a keystroke and use to quickly choose the right password and fill it or copy it to the clipboard to be pasted into the right field. The 1Password Safari extension eliminates a lot of friction when it comes to auto-filling passwords on websites. 1Password’s Quick Access window provides instant access to login information.īut my favorite changes to 1Password come on the integration side. They even went to the trouble of adding a proper Preferences window rather than a fake preferences window that floats inside the existing app window. I switched to 1Password 8 when I switched to using a Mac Studio as my primary Mac, so maybe it’s the Apple silicon (specifically the M1 Max) talking, but the app just feels fast. It feels more like a modern Mac app than the old version did. In redesigning 1Password, AgileBits has made it feel lighter and more modern. The real question is, has AgileBits wrecked its Mac version, or does the new one measure up? Now that it’s out of beta, it’s time to judge. However, as someone who has been happily subscribed to 1Password and using its cloud vaults with a family plan for a few years now, that wasn’t an issue for me. Since local vaults are no longer supported, it won’t please users who don’t want to use 1Password’s cloud-based password vault system. It’s been nine months, and 1Password 8 for Mac arrived this week. Just as there are good and bad Catalyst apps, there are good and bad Electron apps. But using a system like Electron does have consequences: Electron apps have a reputation for being slow, eating up a lot of system memory, and-perhaps most offensively-failing to behave like proper, “native” apps on whatever platform they operate. ![]() I think it’s fair to say that most users don’t care about the tools that a developer uses to write the apps we use. Last summer 1Password maker AgileBits made the wrong kind of news, when it announced that it was killing its traditional Mac app and replacing it with a new one built with Electron, a development system based on web technologies, on top of a cross-platform code base. 1Password 8 for Mac: An upgrade, after all ![]() You cannot bring a stroller onboard JetBlue (unless it’s some super cool compact stroller that folds into the size of a carry-on you paid for), but you can check one stroller per child for free at the ticket counter or the gate.
